In the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the Newtown Creek Wastewater resource recovery facility (WRRF) is the largest wastewater plant. Built in 1969 it is also the newest. As a part of expanding and upgrading the plant a series of projects were planned and bid. One of these projects involved the installation of numerous 30 and 36 inch plug valves.
NYC DEP has long specified DeZURIK plug valves due to their unparalleled quality standards and product life in service. Unfortunately, the contractor involved in one of the projects broke the specification and installed a cheaper manufacturer’s valves. Predictably, these have almost all failed in service and now need to be replaced.
NYC DEP combined 36” plug valves from their inventory with new 36”and 30” plug valves from DeZURIK to replace these valves. All valves are actuated with either Rotork or Limitorque electric actuators.
The plug valves are 100% port with the actuators mounted, tested and certified at DeZURIK’s plant in Sartell, MN.
While the decision to break the original project specification resulted in inferior product and significant additional cost over time, once the DeZURIK valves are installed Newtown Creek Wastewater WRRF will enjoy decades of reliable service.
